Da Vinci Charter Academy was among the 193 middle schools and 180 high schools honored under the state’s new Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program, which is temporarily taking the place of the California Distinguished Schools Program. Da Vinci was the only school in Yolo County to receive a Gold Ribbon School Award this year.
Superintendent Winfred Roberson relayed the news (announced by the California Department of Education on Monday) to the Davis school board during Thursday’s meeting.
“I am proud to announce that the State of California has recognized Da Vinci Charter Academy as one of California’s Gold Ribbon Schools for 2015,” he said. “This honorable distinction reflects the spirit, hard work and vision of the Da Vinci staff and students. We commend their efforts as representatives of our great school district.”
Da Vinci principal Troy Allen told The Enterprise “The application process and subsequent site validation visit was an incredible opportunity to showcase the student, parent, and community perspective of our school. We invest ourselves completely in the work of being an inclusive community and using Project Based Learning to focus on making learning relevant with students and promoting critical thought and reflection. The engagement, collaboration, and rigor noted by the visiting team absolutely makes us proud: our students and staff are deserving of recognition and celebration.”
The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assessment and accountability systems.
Schools applied for the award based on a model program their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies. The new award is recognizing middle and high schools this year and elementary schools in 2016.
The Gold Ribbon awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. These include, the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards.
