“I like to think that families all want the same for their children,” Chen said. “To be successful by their own definition, to live a good life. And I strongly believe that having the skills to be happy and productive will lead to just that. I wanted to build a company that empowers students to take ownership of their lives. Helping them get into their dream college is just another bonus.”

New firm helps students on path to college

Davis has a new education consulting company helping high schoolers and their families deal with the stress of school, teen life and college admissions.

Élan Advising’s two-pronged approach includes Academic Success Coaching and College Admissions Consulting. Owner/President Eda Chen, a UC Davis alumna, calls the first process “academic-centered life coaching for teens.”

Starting as early as ninth grade, Chen and her staff help students identify their stumbling blocks, such as poor study skills, procrastination, stress and time management, and lack of direction or motivation. Coaching sessions address these concerns, giving teens the tools to help them enjoy life and succeed in school.

College admissions advising typically follows a series of academic coaching sessions. There, “Élan Advising will walk them through the process from start to finish: college search, scholarship search, SAT/ACT advising, essay writing and more,” a news release said.
